On September 20, 1970, Mr. S. Baldew started a small trading company in Paramaribo, Suriname. The company literally traded in practically everything that Mr. Baldew saw fit for the Surinamese market. This varied from products is the basic needs category, to construction materials. Mr. Baldew even bartered with neighboring countries to supply them with products that were a surplus in Suriname, in exchange for products which could be sold locally. He named the company International Jumbo Trading. The company became a household name in Suriname, and even started regional delivery. It gained a reputation for being respectable, professional and service oriented. To this day, even after the transition of the trading company into a holding company, Jumbo Group of Companies, the name ‘Jumbo Trading’ is still top of mind when any of the current companies are mentioned.

In 1995, Mr. Baldew saw the opportunity to step into the world of production, and it was an opportunity that he seized willingly and successfully. He took over the well-known furniture factory PEET, and got his first taste in the world of production. He named the company Jumbo Timber, a company which is now a modern furniture factory, suppling both local and regional, commercial, governmental and private customers, with high quality products which fit their furnishing needs.

Another opportunity was seized in 1998. This was the year that Jumbo Alu (short for Aluminum) was founded. This company specializes in the manufacturing of high quality and cost effective aluminum profiles and curtain walls. Over the past 20 years the company has grown into a respectable partner, known for its innovative production and products, as well as its hard working personnel and safety minded environment.

Finally, in 2002, Jumbo Office was founded. A company focused on the interior decoration and furnishing of private residences and commercial buildings alike. It has established itself as a knowledgeable company when it comes to ergonomics and interior design. Wether its for home or for the office, Jumbo Office will find a way to deliver what is needed.

And so a small trading company which started in 1970 with trading onions, is now an established group of companies. The Jumbo Group of Companies officially consists of:

  • Jumbo Timber (High quality custom made furniture)
  • Jumbo Alu (High quality aluminum solutions)
  • Jumbo Office (High quality office furnishings)

The company still strives to grow, which is reflected in the Vision

‘Our vision is to be a regional player with all our companies, supplying all of our markets with high quality products’

To achieve that their Mission states that:

‘Supplying our customers with high quality products at fair prices to ensure that they are provided with solutions for the long term’

In 1995 S. Baldew took over the well-known PEET furniture factory. He saw an opportunity to provide Suriname with customized furniture for both commercial and private applications. Furniture that would withstand the hands of time. During the past 20+ years the company has developed its personnel, its craftsmanship, and its reliability. Three years later, in 1998 Jumbo Alu was founded to extend the manufacturing capabilities and product offerings. This company focuses on aluminum products such as windows, doors, curtain walls etc. These provide customers with an almost maintenance free solution which can resist the elements.

In 2008, Mr. Baldew’s son, Rajiv Baldew, started as an assistant manager within the companies. Within two years he grew to become the new director. Under his leadership they have developed into one, if not the most well-known manufacturing parties within the country. Not only providing their clientele with custom made products, but with products that are quality, reliable, innovative and beautiful at the same time.

Rajiv has focused on a plenitude of areas. First he implemented an enduring development program for personnel, to ensure that both the production and delivery process meet all international standards. He implemented various international standards such as ISO 9001 for quality and OHSAS 18001 for safety. He also optimized the machine fleet, with modern innovative machines which could supply customers with their modern demands.

Jumbo Timber & Alu are customer focused. Because of the high customization aspect, a good collaboration with the customer is a must. Both needs and preferences must be aligned before the design process starts. It starts with ideas, which turn into concepts, which then turn into 3D designs. After finalized designs are approved by the customer, the production process starts. Jumbo not only produces its products, but also delivers and installs with their own team, ensuring that all quality and customer service criteria is met throughout the entire process.
